The flooded grate between the two men demanded their attention, like a gate that led directly into the bowels of hell. Many thought it was a hot place, full of demons and monsters and eternal punishment. That wasn't the case at all.

Hell was a tight squeeze with water up to your neck.

"Alright, Sylvio." Rex had started calling the Paldean that instead of using his proper name. Maybe the younger man thought that it'd make them closer. Maybe he was saving himself a few syllables. Maybe he wasn't all there, and this was a conscious decision to use his last utterances on nicknames before drowning. "I ain't gonna lie to you, this is gonna suck. I've never done this before."

Inspiring words. Rex shimmied in his wetsuit as he spoke, before stacking up another oxygen cannister.

"There's a safe down there, full of cool stuff. We hook a chain to it and the lovely rangers over there..." Rex waved at the two rangers chatting through the doorway. "Pull it up. Lots of fun, and they offer lunch. Sound good?"

"it's...ah never mind..."

if he had a pokédollar for every time he'd been called that, then he'd have enough funds to start up his own institution of some great deal of variety. it'd practically become a pet peeve of his, but alas, none of that was important at this very moment. what was important, rather, was the task at hand: dip oneself into the unforgiving waters in search of essential resources.

and to think that silverio would be tasked with leading a rookie - or so he had claimed to be - in this expedition? oh, how fun indeed. "first time for everything, or so they say." and if he wasn't cautious enough, then this may likely be rex's last. skin-tight wetsuit well-fitted, oxygen tanks secured, goggles locked on. a brief glance in the direction of fellow rangers near a door, and a swift thumbs-up offered to them. the mention of lunch was undoubtedly inspiring, although...

"you do realize i'm one of those people whose volunteering to pay for that lunch, right? you're welcome." a deep breath passed through parted lips as he prepped for a dive into rubble that lied beneath the surface. "anyway, the sooner we can get this done, the better."

standing by was silverio's patented bubbly frog pokémon, signaling downward into the depths was the frogadier's cue to dive in ahead of the human pair. a silent command given to scout the waters below, only to return just moments later showing no signs of potential dangers. yet...

Rex didn't have a Water-type to rely on. He had a Togepi that had waggled its finger and destroyed an entire floor of Sea Mauville with a Metronome-induced Explosion. Silverio didn't need to know that, though. Rex would repent and spend a few months in jail once this was over, but for now, the people here needed their help.

"You are? Nice, man. I hope the sandwiches are Paldean." Rex prepared to slip the breathing apparatus over his face as they prepared to dive into the deep. Silverio's froggy friend had gone and done a quick recon of the water below, and had reported nothing of note. "Alright, lets get going."

The apparatus slipped over Rex's head and he gave a thumbs up, before slipping into the grate below.

As the young trainer's eyes adjusted, he peered into the depths. He saw the safe, but there were an unfortunate number of Binacles surrounding it. Ugly little shits, those.

He gestured at Silverio and his froggy friend and pointed down.

"hope you like prosciutto..." the paldean-native ranger retorted, mainly in jest before securing his breathing tool. silverio would take a moment to double-check his equipment. wetsuit on, nice and tight. oxygen tank at the ready, his amphibious companion standing by. cool, he deemed himself ready to dive into the great beyond.

sapphire pupils directed down beneath the surface. indeed, there was something there. perhaps that was the precious cargo in question? but what would concern the man moreover was the herd of creatures converged around it. perhaps the frogadier hadn't considered them a threat? regardless, not enough to deter silv from the objective.

"binacles...? they shouldn't be a problem as long as we don't do anything that would disorient them. i've already arranged for backup in case things go south." with that being said, silverio moved to dip into the abyss.

Binacles were, unfortunately, assholes. As soon as they started to shift that safe, they'd start throwing hands with the duo. Silverio's frog would be an important ally in this, given Rex's lack of aquatic Pokémon to balance the tide.

Still, if they could avoid conflict for as long as possible, it'd be nice. Rex was fine with a fight, but there wasn't anything he could fight with. Training, then, would be redundant. It was best to focus on the task at hand, get his precious sandwich, and then move on with his life.

As they dove deeper, the safe shined in the darkness. Barnacles crusted over steel and iron, covering the metal life a gentle blanket. Rust spotted the safe like patches of mold, threatening to, with time, punch through the safe's thick walls and destroy the contents within.

Nearby, a hook connected to a thick cord descended alongside Rex and Silverio. A gift from above. Attack the hook to the safe and be done. Easy! As he reached for the hook, his hand brushed against a Binacle, which batted at him.

An explosion of bubbles emerged as Rex grunted in pain.

if it were possible, then silverio would rather wish to avoid a battle with disgruntled pokémon - especially while submerged into the deep blues where, unless you possessed some form of affinity with the waters yourself, mobility would be significantly limited.

regardless, starting a fight here of all places was not silverio's intention by any means, and he could only hope that it would be rex's either. he dove in with his amphibious friend a few strokes behind him to act as the humans' guard if needed.

with the safe coming into their peripherals, silv's eyes turnabout from within the goggles, quickly inspecting for other potential hazards aside from the aforementioned pokémon. one wrong move and either of the two men would be initiating a battle that may be seemingly impossible to win.

and in comes some support in the form of a hook-and-cable. but as luck would have it, contact was made with a binacle, coutesy of rex. suppose it was only natural that it would react in such a way. seeing this, silv directed his frogadier to swoop into the fray, casting a double team - clones of itself swiftly formed around the group as a means of a distraction.

meanwhile, the ranger moved to reach for the hook in his partner's stead with one hand, and with the other, he pushed towards the safe. all the while, more binacles that were likely disturbed by the ruckus had emerged, firing bursts of bubbles. silv's frog shifted to counteract them, giving an opening for him to link the safe to the hook as quickly as he could.

The hook clicked into place. Had a sweeter sound ever been heard? Rex suspected not.

While Silverio danced with the aggravated Pokémon. Rex unceremoniously threw an underwater punch towards a nearby Binacle. It was less of a strike and more of a push. The water would not allow Rex to do any lasting damage to the Pokémon themselves, and he suspected that furthering the gap would be better.

He made a silent vow to grab a Water-type when this was over.

Instead of dealing with the watery threats, Rex swam towards the cord and gave it several ferocious tugs, a signal to pull up the safe. Cracking it would be a pain, but the Hoennian and the Paldean were only here to secure it. Leave it to the corp's safe crackers to do the nerd work.

Slowly, the safe began to rise. Rex gestured at Silverio to hitch a ride.

evidently, securing the precious cargo was only half of the battle. and the other half? it was to return to the water's surface in one piece. while silverio had managed to lock the safe into the place on the hook-and-cable, his frogadier's clones would begin to disperse, one by one. suppose that was a sign telling the humans that their time here was growing thin, but even so, the rowdy binacles refused to retract their impending wraths, relentless in their approach.

one binacle moved to swipe at the ranger, only to be intercepted by a froggy copy that would dissipate on contact. it was at that moment when rex would call for the safe to be tugged up and away, prompting silv to take hold of the cable. seeing this, the frogadier dismissed its remaining clones and shot upwards to follow suit of the humans, grasping its trainer by his foot to join in on the ride back to the surface.

The bends were an obnoxious thing. They were fortunate that the water was relatively shallow, though it was still a dangerous thing. Luckily, the safe rose at a moderately slow rate, and the Binacles below weren't willing to swim up and chase after their home.

A fortunate thing, Silverio and Rex getting jumped by a bunch of barnacles sounded like a horrid end to Rex's great tale. The future champion losing to a bunch of barnacles? Absurd. Deranged. A mockery.

He would not allow it to happen. Especially with Silverio to witness such a folly.

The light shimmered above as the safe breached the surface. Rex pulled the apparatus from his mouth and groaned. His voice was wet and ragged, and he fell onto his back, breathing heavily.

"Fuuuuuuuuuck. Silvestre, that sandwich better be incredible. Hell, it better pay my taxes." The safe landed against the floor with a thud, and rangers began to swarm it and their two brave volunteers. "Never doing that again. I'm scared of that shit."
